Reciprocation
We recently learned about the value of an entrepreneur's time--when requesting to learn from them via personal interview. What really stood out to me was the idea that I could ask 1,000 different entrepreneurs if I could "pick their brain", but it wasn't of much benefit to them, and actually wasted their most valuable asset--time. As I read through the article, I was first offended, then recognized it from the other person's perspective. I am currently homeschooling 5 kids from age 6 to 16, in addition to finishing school and running a small cake business. I am BUSY! I turn down many opportunities because I don't have extra time. Thinking of other entrepreneurs in the same light helped me realize how important it is to be aware of their time. They aren't typical nine-to-fivers, and don't get a lot of free time. So, it is very important to me to be mindful of their time and RECIPROCATE their generosity.
Throughout the last week, I have made an effort to be intentional about reciprocation. The entrepreneur whom I interviewed has been busy getting ready for the upcoming tax deadline--so I invited his family to dinner. Unfortunately, my son broke his arm an hour before and we had to cancel. I'm now planning to make his wife a birthday cake sp they have one less thing to worry about during his busiest time of the year!
Another opportunity I had to reciprocate was for a neighbor who orders cupcakes from me often. She is a well-reviewed estate planner. We have a local "chatty women" FaceBook page where people are often asking for recommendations. I always make sure I recommend Torie as an estate planner. She has helped many people with her loving compassion and is always attuned to the needs of others in our neighborhood. Word-of-mouth recommendations are a great way entrepreneurs can help each other!
I've even been teaching my kids about reciprocation so they can be intentional about doing kind acts for others who show kindness to them. What an important part of friendship AND networking!
