How do you find your passion?

I really enjoyed listening Randy Komisar, CEO of Virtual. He talked about how people get stumped trying to figure out what their "true passion" is. He said you should never ask yourself: "What is THE passion?"

What is THE passion? We can't narrow our lives to just one thing we're passionate about. We need to have many! Komisar even recommended and entire "portfolio of passions"! It inspired me to write a list of all the things I'm passionate about. Here are some.

music, saving money, gardening, painting and improving my house, volleyball, building shelves, organizing, music, exercise, vegetables, yoga, dancing, Jesus Christ, my kids, decorating cakes, nature, hiking, spreadsheets, math--especially algebra, learning...

The cool thing is that I keep getting new passions! In ten years, my list will look different. A year ago, I dreaded making cakes for my kids' birthdays. They were so much work and the day itself was stressful anyway. My husband finally started making all the cakes and cupcakes for birthdays. Then he got burnt out too! Well, last year, he got laid off. I quickly got a job and got COVID. I ended up with lung damage and have been unable to work since. I had the inspiration to try making cakes to sell. I made one for a friend whose baby was in the hospital to practice. Then I took posted pictures of it on FaceBook. By a miracle, my neighbors ordered cakes from me! I added another flavor, then another. I watched hours of YouTube videos about cake decorating and practiced and practiced. I did have some experience from my mom who was also an at-home cake decorator while I was growing up.

As I have lost the ability to dance and exercise to relieve stress, making cakes has become my new happy place. When I'm stressed, I make a cake. When I'm bored, I make a cake. When it's cold and rainy, I make a cake. I have created a new passion that I never had before. I challenge you to make a list of your passions. Then, check back in ten years and see if you have any new ones.
